Fire Drills Review:
If you don't know who Tommy Keene is than shame on you! In The Late Bright marks Keene's eighth album of guitar power pop that is as infectious now as when he first hit the scene back in 1982. I know many of our readers were not even born then but you might recognize Keene's name from playing guitar with Paul Westerberg, Velvet Crush and he was half of the Keene Brothers with Robert Pollard. He has always been critically acclaimed although it has never led to great commercial success but I guarantee after spinning In The Late Bright you not only will enjoy Tommy Keene but will have a better definitive definition of Power Pop!

Fire Drills Review:
This Brooklyn trio has just released a new EP that contains four tracks of sprawling piano driven mid-tempo numbers that make you sit up and listen to their smooth delivery. Somewhere the band falls in between a Coldplay and Death Cab while still making their own niche with honest songwriting and a desire to make quality music. The Prospect EP is an encouraging collection of tracks for a band that already has two indie full lengths in their resume and shared stages with Kristen Hersh, Apollo Sunshine and Squeeze, so it would not surprise me if we don't here more from this group in 2009!

Fire Drills Reivew:
Six years between albums is a longtime in the music world, especially when Iran member Kyp Malone joined TV On The Radio and put out three spectacular records during that time. Clearly this experience now makes Iran the half-brother to TVOTR and also explains why their sound has morphed from a more experimental noise rock group to an indie band with solid song structures. This direction on its own sounds great and Dissolver does not disappoint taken at face value but considering the source, it is hard to not compare the two bands. This comparison hurts Iran a bit and probably is unfair but if there would have been a bit more of their previous self mixed into these pop structures we might be talking about an album of year candidate.

Fire Drills Review:
After taking Thursday's fifth album Common Existence for a spin I went back to the post-hardcore pioneers breakout record Full Collapse [2001] to get a baseline. What I realized is that this is a band that is trying to find their initial spunk. Common Existence succeeds on several tracks to recapture that early glory fire plus with Flaming Lips/MGMT producer Dave Fridmann at the helm, Thursday achieve a bigger layered sound that pushes them into a little newer direction, which could be a energizer for future success.

Fire Drills Review:
You may not know the name Rick Froberg but there is a chance you know his bands Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes. This seven inch is a nice preview to their Sub Pop debut that hits at the end of March and both songs here are exactly the post-punk rockers you would expect. This is a debut record that has slowly climbed onto our radar and this 7" only drives the excitement.

Fire Drills Review:
Sagarmatha is the Appleseed Cast's sixth studio album and it represents a new direction for the Lawrence Kansas band as they dive into experimental post-rock. With five of the record's nine tracks crossing over the six minute mark and many of them only containing about 45 seconds of vocals or none at all, Sagarmatha relies heavily on its dense soundscapes to keep it interesting and will challenge longtime fans of the group. Although I can say that the long shoegaze instrumentals are not bad the band still shines when it clicks back into indie mode on the short and vocal driven "The Summer Before".

It is always a nice surprise to discover an unsigned band that makes you take notice when you play their record. Boston's The Hush Now is one of those bands because their self-titled debut is an infectious slice of alt-pop shoegaze that will win you over after just one spin. Each song is somewhat sprawling with layered vocals but mostly keep themselves contained into 4 minute pop structures. This unique packaging gives The Hush Now a balanced sound but gets the listeners out just at the right time completely satisfied and wanting more!

Fire Drills Review:
If you remember, Lily Allen was one of the first big discoveries from MySpace back in 2006 and It's Not Me, It's You is her much anticipated follow up to her hit making debut. Being a young artist always lends itself to a much quicker stylistic change, which is the sort of makeover found here with Allen. Vocally she sounds 10 years more mature and musically light years ahead of her debut, which can probably be explained in using producer and artist Greg Kurstin (member of Bird And The Bee) as he dialed down her edginess and morphed her into more pop structure formats. This change may turn off fans from the beginning but for the long haul this style fits Allen and the catchy tracks will carry her forward for sure in the UK and in the US she will still be a wildcard. Regardless of what happens it won't be because of lack of talent because talent is what Lily Allen has.

You would never know by listening that Brooklyn's Black Gold is a duo because their debut record Rush is full of big expansive rock and hooks galore. The songs vary from the danceable to the hold the lighter in air ballads, which means there is a little for everyone. With that said, Black Gold have released a debut that may contain many different styles but it maintains consistent transitions that help Rush succeed in offering a solid listen.

The Vox Jaguars bring a fresh energy to the Garage rock scene straight out of Santa Cruz, California. They have a retro 60's groove to some of their playing but have a sound that is closer to the raw energy of 70's punk while just adding in enough guitar riff and modern keyboards that thrush their music into the present day. At only 4 tracks and 15 minutes long there is not much time to spend with the band but for that 15 minutes you start thinking they are the best band you have heard in awhile and scream out - Bring on the full length!

Fire Drills Review:
Don't let this record release from Saddle Creek mislead you into thinking that Omaha's Ladyfinger (ne) fall in line with the labels typical indie offerings. Instead, Ladyfinger (ne) bring a power rock on their sophomore record Dusk, which combines elements from the 70's radio rock of Deep Purple to 90's noise rockers The Jesus Lizard, while putting their own modern stamp on the records ten tracks. What carries Ladyfinger (ne) to another level is the bands musical tightness, which creates a wall of sound attack for each grinding track and is maintained by the calm and cool vocals of Chris Machmuller. These elements all total up for a rock record that will be perfect to roll down the windows and crank on the first Spring day in 2009!

Fire Drills Review:
Not to play too much on the album's title but Marykate is a talented artist from Brooklyn that really has been below the radar and underground with her solid singer/songwriter style until now. Following last years introduction mkULTRA EP [2008], Underground is O'Neil's fourth record and features contributions from Jill Sobule, Micky Grimm (Over The Rhine) and Ken Maiuri (Pedro The Lion) plus the production help of Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Elvis Costello, Sleater-Kinney) and mixing by Brad Jones (Josh Rouse, Matthew Sweet, David Meade). All of this talented help is reflected in Undergrounds big sound while Marykate's likable voice is made for TV soundtracks and given the right break she could be a household name with her simple but endearing delivery.

Fire Drills Review:
Spearin is the third member of Broken Social Scene to release a solo record for Arts & Crafts following Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning. The Happiness Project is an interesting mix of jazz, indie, folk and spoken word that gets more intriguing with every listen. Basically Spearin invited his neighbors over to the house for a casual interview vaguely centered around the subject of happiness then constructed melodies based on and around the voices. It sounds more complicated than it is but once you take a listen you realize how Spearin has taken the stories to a different level and blurred the lines between speech and music. This alone deserves praise because the outcome is 30 minutes of pure indie art!

The Lonely Island is the comedic collaborative of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer and Incredibad captures the music and videos from all of their SNL digital shorts and instant YouTube hits. SNL hit its most creative peak in years during the election season but part of the ramp up included these digital shorts that were absolutely hilarious. From "D**k In A Box" with Justin Timberlake, to the Chronicles Of Narnia spoof rap "Lazy Sunday" and the hardcore side of Natalie Portman in "Natalie's Rap" all sound great and are funny every time you watch. This CD/DVD release of course will only appeal to those who have seen the clips or into comedy but with millions of hits on the Internet I would say there is an audience.

This little EP finds the Swedish group Suburban Kids With Biblical Names growing in their style of jazzy upbeat pop starting right out with the disco romper "1999". With just four songs and 12 minutes the SKWBN get in and get out with a bouncing male/female vocal and upbeat vibe that is infectious when you give it a repeat listen. This holds well for the group and the EP represents a nice teaser to what their full length may sound like when it hits in April.

Fire Drills Review:
Before you get all crazy, Ready For The Flood is not The Jayhawks reunion record but honestly when you get Olson and Louris together it can't turn out bad and who knows - it may be the step in the right direction. This record plays out as billed with back in forth vocals between the two artists and many times it sounds like they are the only ones in the room. Most of the numbers are acoustic driven but there are tracks like "Chamberlain SD" that are foot tapping harmonica fun. This is not the album that longtime fans exactly wanted to hear but in many respects it resembles The Jayhawks breakthrough record Hollywood Town Hall [1992], so trust me and check it out for yourself because their harmonies are worth a listen.

Blue Sky Law is a new unsigned post-hardcore/punk band from the NYC that bring an intensity to their debut 5-song EP which makes them seem like well seasoned veterans. Member Rob Trout fronted one of our past favorite unsigned bands called The Challenger Deep from San Diego so we went into Blue Sky Law with high expectations and combined with drummer and New Yorker Sean Hutcheon (All City) they deliver. From the catchy straightforwardness of "Passport" to the grinding instrumental title track, Blue Sky Law provide 20 minutes of solid riffs and power vocals that will get you excited for a full length!

Fire Drills Review:
I am not sure how to take this supposed French indie pop band when most of the members are Yanks out of New York but that is what you get in Nous Non Plus (pronounced New Non Ploo). The interesting thing is they claim everything sounds better in French and for several tracks on Ménagerie they have me convinced because they are good at their craft. The band does mix in English with their French, so the listener won't be totally lost and overall Nous Non Plus has released a very entertaining jazzy French pop record. The smooth vocals from Swiss-German lead singer Céline Dijon will definitely play well at parties and Nous Non Plus has that "who is that" factor to them, which ultimately says something for their efforts.

On The Fray's debut How To Save A Life [2005] their mix of rock and pop hit a cord that spawned some sweet radio friendly singles and an album that was decent. On the groups self-titled sophomore record they hit the proverbial slump. It is not the songs are bad but that they all have the same slow piano driven style that ultimately makes you hit next. I am sure this record will still be a commercial success because the first single is somewhat catchy but as an album I believe the band is more talented then comes across here.

Hopefully Canadian Jenn Grant will be a name you hear this year as the singer/songwriters sophomore record Echoes is an excellent 13 tracks of modern burners which embrace Grant's sultry vocals. Grant dabbles in a multitude of styles that range from the jazzy "(I've Got) The Two Of You" to the breezy pop of "Parachutes" and includes her own take on Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" which simply just adds to Grant's uniqueness and appeal. Echoes is an album that is built around Grant's best instrument - her voice - and when it comes down to that she will completely win you over!

They hail from Canada and got their odd name from a 19th century British Novel but don't let that distract from The D'Urbervilles brooding record We Are The Hunters. It is an album that only has nine tracks, runs a total of thirty-two minutes and has an instrumental two minute opener, so I know you may not be sold yet but wait! The D’Urbervilles have an energetic raw emotion throughout their album that at its best rocks out in large anthematic explosions and really does not have an at its worst because by borrowing a bit from Joy Division and Interpol the group injects their own modern flavor on We Are The Hunters that we only wish was a little longer!

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart possess a true mix of modern indie, shoegaze and a little 80's inspired alt-pop that together equal a very infectious self-titled debut record. Their ten tracks have a drenched fuzzy surrounding that each have a lush and harmonic indie pop inside which will make you sway, foot tap and hum along on each perfect package. At thirty-five minutes you never get tired of the melodies nor the in your ear buzz that will leave you with a smile and reaching for that repeat button because POBPAH have released that kind of album!

New York's Latvian Radio's sophomore record Seven Layers Of Self-Defense is an honest lo-fi power pop album that succeeds based on its simple song approach, guitar riffs and catchy harmonies. This lighthearted approach embraces Seven Layers Of Self-Defense and gives each track a little extra pep that has an upbeat attitude and is very close to the power pop that ruled the 90's similar to bands like the Gigolo Aunts, Best Kissers In The World and The Posies. It are these qualities that Latvian Radio's record gets better on every spin and makes the listener appreciate the hard effort poured in!

Fire Drills Review:
The Brighton Port Authority is really a new album from Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) and 12 of his guest vocalists, which the bigger names include Iggy Pop, Martha Wainwright, David Byrne and Dizzee Rascal. An album of this sort always still feels like a compilation even though it is under one moniker and put together by Cook but the vocalists bring the real flavor to the record. Nothing on here rises above what Norman has accomplished with Fatboy but there are enough tracks which pop to make it still worth your while especially if you are already a fan!

Two Tongues is really an east meets west side project combination from New Jersey's Chris Conley and David Soloway out of Saves The Day and LA's Max Bemis and Coby Linder from Say Anything. The record is a true mix of the bands, with the higher end vocals of Save The Day rounded out with a more rock Say Anything sound. This is a project that if Two Tongues were a concise EP it would have rocked my brain out but even though it is only thirty five minutes its thirteen tracks don't seem quite finalized enough to all be winners. Any side project can suffer from the lack of time in the process and with some more prep, Two Tongues is a band worth checking out if there is a sophomore record based on the good ideas not fully developed here.

Merge records brings back the classic debut from the Volcano Suns, which consisted of members from the disbanded Mission Of Burma. The record was never released on CD and has never sounded better from the remastering of Bob Weston (Shellac, Nirvana, Sebadoh). The Bright Orange Years is a solid rock punk album from beginning to end and contains a perfect balance of aggression and catchiness. Along with the great album the reissue adds nine extra tracks that include 7-inch only tracks, unreleased tracks and radio sessions.

Fire Drills Review:
On The Besties sophomore record Home Free they have lost the drum machine and become a full fledge band, which has helped them create an album that sounds completely focused, more mature and has a much fuller sound. This shift is not a bad thing for the band because they are able to retain the important characteristics that made their debut Singer [2005] so endearing which were the sweet lead vocals of Marisa Bergquist and the infectious harmonizing help from childhood friend Kelly Waldrop. The Besties play it fairly straightforward on Home Free and never leave their comfort zone of surreal indie pop song structures but at the end of the day that is what you tune in for so who can blame The Besties for doing what they know and doing it well!

Cut Off Your Hands have all the elements of releasing a memorable rock record. They come from somewhere different (New Zealand), they get a hot shot producer (Bernard Butler of Suede Fame and Duffy), and their tracks contain big sprawling hooks that pop when you hear them and most importantly you remember them. The band offers a superb style of Britpop and can crank up the volume on bouncing tracks like "It Doesn't Matter" and "Let's Get Out Of Here" but shine on the somber ballad "In The Name Of Jesus Christ" and the catchy slow charmer "Heartbreak". Cut Off Your Hands may not hit the big time in the States but should make some noise elsewhere enough that we hear from them again!

Singer/songwriter Denison Witmer has slowly been building a fan base with each quality release in his catalog. Carry The Weight is Witmer's sixth album and it contains more top notch mid tempo numbers that let you just relax and focus on Witmer's pleasant vocals and lyrical story telling. Denison is still not a household name but has be compared to Nick Drake, Jackson Browne, and Elliott Smith so if that tells you something - you would be right because with the right break any one of these eleven songs could put him on your radio!

BM Linx are a powerful electronic rock n roll band from New York, New York and their sophomore record Black Entertainment is a real mix of Muse meets The Killers with Orgy joining the party. Everything found here is amped up and sound great with headphones. There are the pulsating bass lines, heavy beats, the in front vocals, precision drums make Black Entertainment a top notch effort but the inclusion of the instrumental "White Limousine" and the smooth appropriately acoustic closer "UO Acoustic" help set the album apart from the crowd. It is also worthy to note that the record was mixed by Alan Moulder (NIN, Smashing Pumpkins, Depeche Mode), which seems like the perfect selection and resulted in Black Entertainment's slick sounding tracks!

Mavis Staples marched, sang and protested alongside Dr. Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960 so it is refreshing to hear her still bring the noise at age 69. Staples states that she was at Chicago's Hideout to "bring joy, happiness, inspiration and some positive vibrations" which are all tasks she completes on this live record. Regardless of your normal listening genre, Staples is an artist that everyone should take a second to check out because she is the picture of what passion, heart, spirit and dedication looks like and it is all captured here on her hour long set!

On Pit Er Pat's third album High Times I can tell you that they have pulled out all the stops to use instruments that you didn't know even existed like the electric kalimba, a bobo balaphone, the vibraslap and let's not forget the Burmese temple gongs. All kidding aside because Pit Er Pat really do incorporate those plus an even more expansive variety of instruments to create their 70's style Eastern lounge vibe complete with the sultry vocals of Fay Davis-Jeffers. With the spooky sounding space sounds in "Cooper Pennies" and the infectious jive noise on "The Cairo Shuffle", Pit Er Pat bring another dose of intrigue with High Times that will retain their fanbase while capturing any indie spirited listener who just happens to stumble into their realm.

It sort of surprises me that Rahim are not bigger on the indie scene because their style of jangular indie pop is not only catchy it is pretty good. Now on their sophomore record, Laughter finds the group evolving from the harder edged and J. Robbins influenced debut into more of a subtle indie group that represents more like a Death Cab. This of course is not a bad transition because Rahim still bring smart lyrics, humable choruses and bundle their eleven tracks into a nice thirty minute package. Laughter is one of those albums that after repeated listens you still find something new and it sinks in that Rahim are a band you love to hear but you just don't tell anybody - shame on you!

You might not expect this combo of soul, blues and attitude to smoke up out of Austin, Texas but Black Joe Lewis and his Honeybears bring it right at you with their 12 minute 4 song preview EP. With songs like "Bitch, I Love You" and "Master Sold My Baby" it is definitely new school but Lewis reincarnates the energy and spirit of James Brown, which is instantly likable. This preview will certainly build some anticipation for their Lost Highway full length Tell 'Em What Your Name Is! due March 17th.

Tillman joined up with Fleet Foxes after the Sun Giant EP, which we know turned out pretty good for him but he was originally a solo artist and Vacilando Territory Blues is his fifth record. Besides not having the constant lush harmonic choruses of the Fleets, his record follows the same kind of format and Tillman's voice shines with his acoustic guitar accompaniment plus he rounds things out with Foxes Christian Wargo and Casey Wescot helping out. If the Fleet Foxes are the Yin then Tillman's solo record is the Yang because even if they are not supposed to, they really do compliment each other and once again puts an exclamation mark next to the future output of this groups members.

Simon Honisett and Jonathan Jubera make up the Portland duo MarvelAnn, which have been around for about ten years. They don't have much output since Bad Advice is the groups sophomore outing but their soft style of indie pop grows with you on every repeat listen. The pair recruited a gob of other artists for a contribution to Bad Advice, which is why it is filled with lush and large arrangements that include pedal steel, accordion, vibes and strings. The extra instrumentation provides a sculpted soundscape that helps MarvelAnn achieve the surreal dream pop that makes for a pleasant listen and will turn you into a fan!

Fire Drills Review:
Reel Big Fish were one of those bands that had the right song ("Sell Out") at the the right time (Ska Launch) but if you knew anything about them you would know that they were just as much about the fun as they were about the music. Fame, Fortune And Fornication finds the band 13 years after their breakout album and long after ska is back underground, so it is no surprise that this is an album of interesting covers from the likes of Poison, Slade, John Mellencamp, Eagles, Tom Petty, and more. It is a fun listen but at the end of the day is it necessary - probably not but it still is enjoyable and fans will definitely check it out - the rest will just pass it over.

It is official - this is new Wrens material and we are all giddy with excitement. "Pulled Fences" comes to us via The Wrens website and the song was recorded last year live on WorldSpace Sessions at Abbey Road. It is a five minute pop nugget that slow builds itself, peaks in the middle and then just gracefully fades away as smoothly as it came in. Basically, another solid track in their catalog. In other Wrens news this year marks the bands 20th anniversary, they have signed to Absolutely Kosher Records and are looking to release a new record in the Spring - lets say a little indie prayer!

I can't say that I am a person that ever really cares to relive a movie through its soundtrack but on occasion a film comes along that the music integrates so marvelously that listening again is a must. The charming Slumdog Millionaire is just one of those movies as composer A.R. Rahman and director Danny Boyle make you feel emotion through their perfectly sequenced pieces. The soundtrack already has won a Golden Globe for Best Original Score and has been nominated for three Academy Award nominations. If you have not seen the film the soundtrack is full of fast paced heavy beats that represent the culture while giving them an electric jolt of modernization plus the ever powerful M.I.A., making listening a fun experience every time.

You may be unfamiliar with the band but probably not the guitarist because LeATHERMOUTH is the hardcore-punk side project from Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance. Now before MCR fans run out to make a purchase I got to warn you...X0 is punishing, bashing, pounding, harsh and crack your head brutal. If I still have your attention then LeATHERMOUTH is for you and compared to others in the genre the band kills it. 10 songs in 20 minutes leaves no room extras and with songs like "I Am Going To Kill The President Of The United States Of America" and "Sunsets Are For Muggings" you realize quickly that LeATHERMOUTH are not playing. Iero says that X0 was his way to deal with depression and anxiety - after taking it for a spin it will heal all that ails you too!

This may be a quick letdown for My Morning Jacket's huge touring following but for many this might pull you in to to check it out. The EP contains six tracks with "Dear Wife" being the only new song on the list. A key point to make about this EP is that the songs have been re-recorded and each one has been updated with some new tweaks. This simply shows that once again My Morning Jacket are the band to see live because they can take any of their catalog and make it feel fresh!

The 88 are power pop band from sunny California that has a total British invasion sound to them. Not Only...But Also possesses a confidence that comes through song after song and The 88 have that big sprawling sound which is made for radio. The album was produced by Babyface and Matt Wallace (Faith No More) which is an interesting combo and it must have led to the balance of pop and rock that can found here. The 88 is not putting earth shattering life changing music but Not Only...But Also is a good album from beginning to end with just the right mix of rockers and ballads to keep you entertained.

Not only is this one of Animal Collective's most accessible albums to date it is also one of their best. Merriweather Post Pavilion finds duel vocalists Dave Portner and Noah Lennox sounding completely comfortable in their roles and displays a sixth sense that each one knows what the other is thinking because their vocals completely gel, which increases the catchiness on every track. The in your face noises beep and blip in and out but you don't even notice because they lock into the dance rock beats and the layered harmonies that keep the listener totally mystified - that does not happen very ofter consistenly on any album but Merriweather Post Pavilion does it to you track after track. This is an album that not only will probably land high in the 2009 Top 50 but also in the decade Top 50!

Bon Iver's debut For Emma, Forever Ago was technically self-released in 2007 and then of course the critical praise came upon its re-release in 2008. It would seem now that Bon Iver is golden and this four track Blood Bank EP is exciting because it is his first new material in awhile and it shows that his debut was no fluke. The songs are consistent, hush and the closing track "Woods" is completely different with vocal effects that are intriguing and haunting while allowing you to realize that this is why Bon Iver is the "it" artist right now!

This avant-rock trio from the San Fran area are ready to take the indie world by storm. This is a tour only EP that showcases their capabilities in a small package. The group has a very mellow vibe with their soft vocals and calm strumming, while each song has an inner layer that is completely infectious. The EP concludes with "Hejrat" which is a cover song from Googoosh that puts a exclamation point on Sholi's range. This is Andrew Bird's fifth solo record and like Armchair Apocrypha [2007] he has stayed the course of the singer/songwriter crafting an indie pop record that is full of exciting turns and spins. What you know you are going to get with Bird is his intricat arrangements and detail to lyrics which shine though track after track on Noble Beast. The other thing about Bird that never vanishes from his records are the throwback jazzy moments of his Squirrel Nut Zipper days, which I believe add depth to his superb catalog and right here on another solid offering with Noble Beast.

Black Eyed Soul is the hard work of Jason Moon Wilkins and it represents a stand out resume and a solid two years putting the record together. He has been in several bands and more notably a bassist for Josh Rouse and Garrison Starr. Wilkins has made a lot of friends along the way and Black Eyed Soul taps into those contacts which include Garrison Starr, vocalist Betsy Roo (who co-wrote the Dolly Parton song "Jesus & Gravity"), Justin Townes Earle (Bloodshot Records), Billy Mercer (Ryan Adams), and Rollum Haas (The Features, Brendan Benson). It is this solid musicianship and Wilkins honest vocals that make Blue Eyed Blacks a band to check out and a debut record in Black Eyed Soul to take for a ride.

The National Snack are a three piece from the UK that play a very funky rock that shows off that they were influenced by the likes of the B-52s and Frank Zappa but also have a grinding rock side to them like The Subways and even the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The group shifts lead vocals from track to track between Gemma Storr and Joe Carlo that works to keep things interesting and offers up a lot of different looks in just 15 minutes. The band is working on a full length and if Apply Machine is a tell it should be a rockin' fun time with their energy and sass!

Fire Drills Review:
When you have a stellar voice like Sarah Rabdau everything else really should fall into place. On her self-titled album with the Self-Employed Assassins that is exactly what happens as her crystal clear and siren like vocals meld with the instrumentation of piano, violin and drums. The songs very in tempo from some more outright upbeat foot tappers like "Weekend" or the more quiet "Autumn Spills" that rely heavily on Rabdau's pleasant vocals. Sarah Rabdau And Self-Employed Assassins have been honing their skills since 2005 and this release showcases all of their hard work and it is solid from beginning to end!

Fire Drills Review:
D.O.A. have been around longer then most Fire Drills readers probably have been alive but if you check out their new release Northern Avenger you will get a quick taste of what the Vancouver group has been doing for thirty years. What is most interesting about Northern Avenger is that the record was produced by famed Bob Rock (Metallica) but don't think he tamed the band. Songs like "Devil's Speedway" and "This Machine Kills Fascists" keep their punk roots and politics alive while a CCR cover of "Who Will Stop The Rain?" shows a little lighter side D.O.A. but together the group delivers fifteen tracks of their best in quite awhile!

Fire Drills Review:
Passenger is Philadelphia's East Hundred's long time coming debut record after starting out just as a basement recording project in 2004. The group has a charismatic and powerful lead vocalist in front woman Beril Guceri, whose vocals have a smooth and relaxing effect on the listener as her pitch perfect delivery guides you through each synth, guitar and drum ladden track. Passenger was well worth the wait as this five-piece have honed their skills and are ready to be heard with 9 songs that are vibrant, lush and catchy.

The Church Animals are a husband and wife duo who make all kinds of things that includes art, music and tasty treats. The groups The Bathtub [EP] is a quick 15 minute lo-fi indie nugget that is nice and simple acoustic strumming with back n forth vocals that is not only sincere but completely infectious. The Bathtub [EP] is one of those records that you don't give much notice until it spins and you quickly find yourself tapping your feet and singing backup harmonies - that is when you know you are onto something!

Fire Drills Review:
I will tell you upfront that this disc disappointed me on several levels. The first level is that The All-American Rejects try too hard to be radio friendly. On many of the tracks here they have been polished beyond recognition. The second level is that I really liked this bands self titled debut when they were back on Doghouse Records and it was about the music. There is nothing wrong with popularity or writing catchy songs but they need to be sincere - Not much on When The World Comes Down feels that way even though there still are a couple tracks that show the power pop talent AAR possess but unfortunately they are far a few between.

You can never look down on the uniqueness that is the Los Straitjackets. Over the last ten years the band has created their own version of surf guitar that includes wearing Mexican wrestling masks. When you listen to their albums the band always brings a solid scorching so it is no surprise that they covered Smells Like Teen Spirit. It is a pretty straight forward instrumental version but still has the Straitjackets trademark twang which makes it a must for fans and a novelty for Nirvana lovers. Side Note: Los Straitjackets new album is tentatively set to release in April.

Lucero frontman makes his solo debut on this EP with an interesting twist - the lyrics and songs were inspired from the Cormac McCarthy novel Blood Meridian. The EP does not stray too far from the Lucero sound but Nichols delivers a very heartfelt and emotional performance as you can tell he is really into these tracks. What also does not change is Nichols' rough and gruff voice which fits perfectly in songs about going West, outlaws and preachers!

Fire Drills Review:
The Weight are a straight up twangy rock band from Brooklyn that play hard, sing loud, and generally sound like they are having a great time. Are Men has a laid back feel to it but musically it is tight and comes complete with sing along choruses, three-part harmonies and solid guitar work. The Weight offers everything you want from this type of album, which is some hearty gang vocals, just the right balance of country in the rock and the feeling that seeing them live is going to blow your mind!

As you take Russell Huie's new EP Cheer The Bombs On for a spin you may think that his voice seems very familar. This familiarity comes from the simple fact that if you mixed up the vocal styles of Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright and Ron Sexmith you would come out with Huie's soft mix delivery, which is completely infectious. It is Huie's voice along with each building mid-tempo number that is the true strength of this EP and makes for a pretty good indie pop journey contained in a nice musically tight twenty minute package.

Clearly there are lots of youngsters out there that have no idea who Glen Campbell is hence the title of his new record Meet Glen Campbell. This record may be aimed at just that group with its interesting collection of ten cover tracks that Campbell tackles Travis, Green Day, Foo Fighters, U2, and Petty to just name a few. What anyone can appreciate is Campbell's inviting vocals and how he can take these more modern songs and put his simple pop country twist to them making the tracks his own. Meet Glen Campbell is an easy record to connect to a new generation and showcases that Glen Campbell's sound never went anywhere.

Like we have to tell you that Robert Pollard moves fast and why should his new band the Boston Spaceships be any different. Headache Revolution is the first single to be released from their new forthcoming sophomore album The Planets Are Blasted. Three of the four tracks are out right rockers with crashing drums and crunchy guitar while "Dementia Is Rising" recalls the glory of the GBV lo-fi days. The longest track here is 2:22 and all three b side tracks are not included on the album. This 7 inch is limited to 500 copies so it is definitely worth picking up if you are a completest!

It is always good to have friends and especially ones that are talented. Brooklyn singer/songwriter Willie Breeding called upon his buddies in Marah to lend a hand to his new record Cheap Vodka Rain which is a perfect complement to his folk country vocal delivery. The record comes complete with all the rock country staple instruments like the mandolin, pedal steel, fiddle, organ and backing harmonies that bring each song to their pinnacle. Breeding offers up a sincere and honest album that is great for those days when your sorrows seem to be circulating so you might as well let Willie share his!

Portland's The Standard were lost in the whole V2 label debacle and decided to release their fifth album Swimmer on their own newly created Partisan imprint. Swimmer has a very complete and precise vibe to its complex song structures and with its catchy mid tempo numbers that build slowly and live and die with frontman Tim Putnam. It is his calm and likable vocals that make Swimmer one of the bands best pieces of work and deserves to be heard by more people then I know it has!
